The Beginners Guide To Writing An Essay

The Beginner's Guide To Writing An Essay Natalie always brought some new toy with her to lessonsâ€"toys which I would sternly take away from her and place under the table until she finished her work. At the tutoring center where I work, a strict emphasis on discipline leaves no room for paper crowns or rubber chickens. Tears streamed down my face and my mind was paralyzed with fear. Sirens blared, but the silent panic in my own head was deafening. As the lesson progressed, Natalie became more fitful; she refused to release her feathered friend, and kept addressing the bird for help with difficult problems. Determined to tame this wryly, wiggling student, I stood my ground, set on converting this disobedient child to my calm, measured ways of study. Surprised by my knowledge, he offered his lab to me for a simpler project if I was interested, but ultimately admitted that the scope of the goal was much too ambitious. I didn’t run for a student council position because I thought the competition was too fierce. I didn’t join robotics because I felt the learning curve was too high. Meanwhile, Isaac dauntlessly wrestled with earthworms twice his size. Even when he was sick, he continued to swim and climb, all despite the infection. Armed with a red pen, I slowly walked across the room to a small, isolated table with pink stools. Swinging her legs, my young student beamed and giggled at me, slamming her pencil bag on the table and bending over to pick up one of her toys. Yet, I realized I hadn’t really changedâ€"I had only shifted perspective. I still eagerly explored new worlds, but through poems and prose rather than pastures and puddles. As a fourteen-year-old from a single mother household, without a driver’s license, and seven hours from home, I was distraught over the prospect of losing the only parent I had. My fear turned into action as I made some of the bravest decisions of my life. Now that my dojang flourishes at competitions, the attacks on me have weakened, but not ended. I may never win the approval of every parent; at times, I am still tormented by doubts, but I find solace in the fact that members of my dojang now only worry about competing to the best of their abilities. And I’d gotten glasses, having grown horrifically nearsighted; long nights of dim lighting and thick books had done this. I couldn’t remember the last time I had lain down on a hill, barefaced, and seen the stars without having to squint. Crawling along the edge of the tent, a spider confirmed my transformationâ€"he disgusted me, and I felt an overwhelming urge to squash him. Showers alleviate even the stomachache from a guacamole-induced lack of self-control. I emailed a couple more labs with less deliberation and more conviction, but was told that my ambitions to study TTX was a project best-suited for a postdoc, not a high schooler. Despite the results, I wasn’t discouraged; I was proud of myself for stretching my limits. The professors’ answers didn’t indicate failure, but rather motivated me to try again in the future. I brought the subject up again, this time mentioning the specific subfield of cryo-electron microscopy. My failure to recognize Max’s suffering brought home for me the profound universality and diversity of personal struggle; everyone has insecurities, everyone has woes, and everyone â€" most certainly â€" has pain. I am acutely grateful for the conversations he and I shared around all of this, because I believe our relationship has been fundamentally strengthened by a deeper understanding of one another. Further, this experience has reinforced the value of constantly striving for deeper sensitivity to the hidden struggles of those around me. I’d grown to prefer the boom of a bass over that of a bullfrog, learned to coax a different kind of fire from wood, having developed a burn for writing rhymes and scrawling hypotheses. I thought of my hands, how calloused and capable they had been, how tender and smooth they had become. It had been years since I’d kneaded mud between my fingers; instead of scaling a white pine, I’d practiced scales on my piano, my hands softening into those of a musicianâ€"fleshy and sensitive.

How To Write A Strong College Application Essay

How To Write A Strong College Application Essay I strive to become fluent in Spanish; traveling the world is a dream of mine. Recently, I have discovered that I really like to code; I’m sure in the coming years I will explore things I didn’t know I was interested in. Create an outline that breaks down the essay into sections. Avoid sorting through your existing English class essays to see if the topics fit the bill. These pieces rarely showcase who you are as an applicant. Reading aloud will also help you ensure your punctuation is correct, and it’s often easier to hear awkward sentences than see them. Let your essay sit for a while before you proofread it. Approaching the essay with a fresh perspective gives your mind a chance to focus on the actual words rather than seeing what you think you wrote. I love to play viola; I get a rush communicating without-words to my quartet members in order to convey a musical message. I am at my happiest reading a good book; their complex stories captivate me and I aspire to write a novel of my own. I want to make laws that improve my country; all people should have a shot at the American dream. I am passionate about protecting the environment; reducing our effect on global-warming is of the utmost importance to me. I want to help those in need; people still don’t have access to clean water and I want to use my privilege to help change that. The duality of the periodic tableâ€"the cold, hard numbers mixed with the reassuring, steadfast patternsâ€"has manifested itself in every aspect of my life. The world of coding presented itself to me as a way to bring the patterns I loved into the world in a way I could see them. To a casual onlooker, this question may appear inconsequential in its hypothetical nature, but as they say; you are what you eat. My inclination towards the varied is not contained to my food habitsâ€"it is a recurring theme throughout my life. I grew up scaling the tallest trees I could find, desiring the highest vantage point. Growing up in the uniformly flat state of Florida, I was limited in my upward journey. Luckily, I rekindled my love for climbing in high school, and now cannot imagine life without it. My passion for climbing is fueled by the adrenaline that pumps through my veins. Start with your main idea and follow it from beginning to end. All good stories have a beginning, a middle, and an end, so shape your story so that it has an introduction, body, and conclusion. Following this natural progression will make your essay coherent and easy to read. The rules for writing a good essay are no different. After you brainstorm, you’ll know what you want to say, but you must decide how you’re going to say it. These essays are answers to past prompts from either the Common Application or the Universal Application, both of which Johns Hopkins accepts. You'll see a similar structure in many of the essays. The author starts with a very detailed story of an event or description of a person or place. CollegeXpress has everything you need to simplify your college search, get connected to schools, and find your perfect fit. This forces you to read each word individually and increases your chances of finding a typo. I regularly switch from my mom’s house to my dad’s. I have a fifteen-year-old sister and a two-year-old brother. We hope these essays inspire you as you prepare to compose your own personal statements. The most important thing to remember is to be original as you share your own story, thoughts, and ideas with us. I could have easily chosen to spend that summer the traditional way; in fact, my parents even tried to persuade me into taking a break. The single most important part of your essay preparation may be simply making sure you truly understand the question or essay prompt. When you're finished writing, you need to make sure that your essay still adheres to the prompt. Take time to understand the question or prompt being asked.

Better College Decisions, Admissions Advice & Application Data When he reveals each lesson at the end, one after the other, we sense how all these seemingly random events are connected. We realize this writer has been carefully constructing this piece all along; we see the underlying structure. After he leaves, I take out my notebook and begin writing where I left off. ” my grandmother used to nag, pointing at me with a carrot stick. He would scoff at me when he would beat me in basketball, and when he brought home his painting of Bambi with the teacher’s sticker “Awesome! ” on top, he would make several copies of it and showcase them on the refrigerator door. But I retreated to my desk where a pile of “Please draw this again and bring it to me tomorrow” papers lay, desperate for immediate treatment. The host dad Michael was a high school English teacher and the host mom Jennifer (who had me call her “Jen”) taught elementary school. She had recently delivered a baby, so she was still in the hospital when I moved into their house. The Martinez family did almost everything together. Within two months I was calling them mom and dad. Of course, those 28 months were too short to fully understand all five families, but I learned from and was shaped by each of them. I don’t remember a single time that they argued about the games. Afterward, we would gather in the living room and Danielle would play the piano while the rest of us sang hymns. The host mom Shellie was a single mom who had two of her own sons and two Russian daughters that she had adopted. The kids always had something warm to eat, and were always on their best behavior at home and in school. My room was on the first floor, right in front of Shellie’s hair salon, a small business that she ran out of her home. We made pizza together, watched Shrek on their cozy couch together, and went fishing on Sunday together. Dawn, the host mom didn’t like winter, and Mark, the host dad, didn’t like summer. After dinner, we would all play Wii Sports together. I was the king of bowling, and Dawn was the queen of tennis. For analysis of what makes this essay amazing, go here. In the living room were six or seven huge amplifiers and a gigantic chandelier hung from the high ceiling. At first, the non-stop visits from strangers made me nervous, but soon I got used to them. I don’t remember a single time that they argued about the games.Afterward, we would gather in the living room and Danielle would play the piano while the rest of us sang hymns. It would be fair to say that this was all due to Shellie’s upbringing. On rainy days, Michael, Jen and I would sit on the porch and listen to the rain, talking about our dreams and thoughts. Once you’ve hooked the reader, switch gears a little to set up the essay in a way appropriate for an introduction. Although they're phrased differently from college to college, certain essay question types appear routinely. While there is no perfect length for an essay, we recommend that you aim for 500 to 550 words. It should establish for the reader a sense of expectation for what’s to come without giving it all away. Relate to the reader the full scope of an experience â€" sights, sounds, and maybe even smells. Be careful, however, not to overuse imagery; otherwise the essay may sound forced, unnatural and give the reader the impression you are trying too hard to be creative. The fewer words you can use to relay your message, the better. Such writing asks the writer to be more creative about the way phrases and sentences are worded. DON’T rehash information that is already in your application. I graduated summa cum laude from Northwestern University's theatre and creative writing programs. If the student is on call for work, he or she will need access to a phone. The list of exception-worthy scenarios is endless. The primary argument supporting cell phone control in the classroom is the fact that phones can be distracting. Not only do cell phones distract instructors, but they may also distract students trying to pay attention to the lecture. If a student needs to answer the phone during an emergency, he or she can step out of the classroom to do so. This setup would give the students and the instructor peace of mind. Arguments against cell phone control typically focus on safety concerns. Should a crisis occurs in the classroom, students should have their phones on hand to make a call. Essay Tips

Essay Tips It was my turn to take the shovel, but I felt too ashamed to dutifully send her off when I had not properly said goodbye. I refused to let go of my grandmother, to accept a death I had not seen coming, to believe that an illness could not only interrupt, but steal a beloved life. Though her withered hands no longer displayed the swiftness and precision they once did, her face showed the aged rigor of a professional. For the first time in years, the smell of garlic filled the air and the rattling of the silver bowl resonated throughout the house. The world I come from consists of underwear, nuclear bombs, and punk rockers. My world is inherently complex, mysterious, and anti-nihilist. Through my work, I can accept the shovel without burying my grandmother’s memory. However, a simple walk on a hiking trail behind my house made me open my own eyes to the truth. Over the years, everything--even honoring my grandmother--had become second to school and grades. When I speak with people in their native language, I find I can connect with them on a more intimate level. One day, my mom brought home fresh cabbages and red pepper sauce. She brought out the old silver bowl and poured out the cabbages, smothering them with garlic and salt and pepper. Gingerly, my grandma stood up from the couch in the living room, and as if lured by the smell, sat by the silver bowl and dug her hands into the spiced cabbages. As her bony hands shredded the green lips, a look of determination grew on her face. TYPICAL ESSAYS REQUIRED MAJOR ESSAY , YOUR ACADEMIC INTEREST, YOUR MOST IMPORTANT ACTIVITY, and WHY THIS UNIVERSITY THE BEST FOR YOU The most important element in each essay you write is YOU! It is YOU that the admission’s committee is trying to evaluate. Therefore, what better way to communicate the very essence of you than by writing an original and truly impressive college essay. I am David Phan, somebody who spends his weekends debating in a three piece suit, other days immersed within the punk rock culture, and some days writing opinionated blogs about underwear. Cancer, as powerful and invincible as it may seem, is a mere fraction of a person’s life. It’s easy to forget when one’s mind and body are so weak and vulnerable. I want to be there as an oncologist to remind them to take a walk once in a while, to remember that there’s so much more to life than a disease. While I physically treat their cancer, I want to lend patients emotional support and mental strength to escape the interruption and continue living. I started to believe that academic perfection would be the only way to redeem myself in her eyes--to make up for what I had not done as a granddaughter. When my parents finally revealed to me that my grandmother had been battling liver cancer, I was twelve and I was angry--mostly with myself. They had wanted to protect me--only six years old at the time--from the complex and morose concept of death. Hurt that my parents had deceived me and resentful of my own oblivion, I committed myself to preventing such blindness from resurfacing. They covered the precious mahogany coffin with a brown amalgam of rocks, decomposed organisms, and weeds. Writing your major essay and several auxiliary ones takes many hours. If your write a comical, ironical, or satirical essay, be sure that you show a serious or thoughtful side of yourself as well. Real people read your words, and your words must reflect a real person, not a dictionary. Don’t attempt to be funny when you have never written a funny essay in your life. Before I could resolve my guilt, I had to broaden my perspective of the world as well as my responsibilities to my fellow humans. I became desperately devoted to my education because I saw knowledge as the key to freeing myself from the chains of ignorance. While learning about cancer in school I promised myself that I would memorize every fact and absorb every detail in textbooks and online medical journals. And as I began to consider my future, I realized that what I learned in school would allow me to silence that which had silenced my grandmother. However, I was focused not with learning itself, but with good grades and high test scores. GUIDELINES Take TIME … time to explore ideas, think about your many choices, and time to write and re-write. You can complete your application form in an hour or two.

The Best College Essay Length

The Best College Essay Length You are not required to incriminate yourself in your application essay, nor should you. “In 10th grade, I became a hooker.” Yes, this is the actual first line of an application essay we received a few years ago and something I never imagined I would see while reading an admissions essay. Immediately I was stunned trying to think of the events that must have lead up to this moment and how this student was going to swing this into a positive light. What I didn’t know at the time was that a “hooker” was actually the name of a position on a rugby team. The student went on about how he developed the strength and technique needed to be successful in the position and how that experience shaped him into the man he had become. I bought this book thinking it would just be about the nuts-and-bolts of writing the college essay. The book does thoroughly cover this topic, however it's real value for the money is the insight and jolt of reality it provides into the process of admission from the point of view of the admissions staff. The volume of applications that each admissions officer reads the quick pace of the actual decision making was astonishing. This book is very well-written and provides a wealth of information about college essays. It is not so much a roadmap to writing the college essay, but rather a very insightful overview of general points that admissions staff look for in these essays. Nearly all colleges and universities require students to write an essay to supplement their application to attend the institution. Applicants are usually given an essay prompt and a word limit within which to express themselves. The essays usually cover topics relating to the student’s experiences and opinions. Whether writing comes easy or is a struggle for you, writing an essay can be a significant challenge and it can feel like your whole application is riding on that one essay. This module can help you to sort through what you need to do to write the best essay you can write. We found it a useful read in conjunction with a more pragmatic guide to writing the essay. I don't normally write reviews for books, but this book is so good at its purpose--to help people become better writers. But that’s the wrong way to approach this vital component, says former college admissions officer Harry Bauld. At Brown and Columbia, he saw what prospective students often did wrongâ€"and now tells you how to do it right. In my experience, students love to write about how they have learned from their mistakes. They will go on and on about the time they did this illegal thing and broke the law, but it’s OK, because they learned from their mistake. The application process is competitive, and there are plenty of good applicants out there who have never broken the law. Reading essay examples can be helpful in guiding you to writing your own good essay. However, make sure that the essay is completely original. Never copy an essay from the internet or have someone else write it for you. The risks are greater than any benefit you might get by plagiarizing an essay. Do not assume that if someone else writes the essay for you that it will produce a high quality essay. One of the most stressful aspects of the college application process is the essay. Most students worry about what an admissions officer looks for in a writing sample. Whether or not it was intentional, this student started his essay in a way that certainly caught the attention of the admissions committee, and that’s what your first sentences absolutely need to do. The majority of stress and work in the admissions process stems from the essay writing. These essays are a critical component of a student’s application, as it’s one of the only opportunities to inject personality into an application. The goal of the essay is to provide admission professionals an opportunity to see you, beyond your GPA and test scores, as an individual person with your own unique experiences. One hurdle that you must surmount when planning to go to college is the application process. It can be laborious, time intensive, confusing, and overwhelming. The college essay can feel like the worst part of the application process. I did not think my writing would improve very much, yet this book has pointed out serious issues I suffer with my writing. Writing for AP classes in high school relies on assertions and facts to support it. However, when writing about oneself in the personal statement or any other point in one's life, this book offers a plethora of tips to give your writing a facelift. It definitely helped me write essays I would not have been able to write before reading the book.

Can I Reuse The Same Essay On A Different Application?

Can I Reuse The Same Essay On A Different Application? But at times I still had to emotionally support my mom to avoid sudden India trips, or put my siblings to bed if my parents weren’t home at night. Over time, I found it difficult being my family’s glue. I wanted back the family I had before the restaurant--the one that ate Luchi Mongsho together every Sunday night. Over the next two years, things were at times still hard, but gradually improved. My parents decided to start anew, took some time apart, then got back together. In a world where we know very little about the nature of “Truth,” it’s very easyâ€"and temptingâ€"to construct stories around truth claims that unfairly legitimize or delegitimize the games we play. I analyze why I think this essay works in The Complete Guide, Session 6. Violence has always surrounded me and haunted me. In high school, I slowly began to forge a community of creators with my peers. The chicken--confused, betrayed, disturbed--slowly lifts its eyes from the now empty ground. For the first time, it looks past the silver fence of the cage and notices an unkempt sweep of colossal brown and green grasses opposite its impeccably crafted surroundings. My close friend Akshay recently started stressing about whether his parents were going to get divorced. With John’s advice, I started checking in on Akshay, spending more time with him, and coaching him before and after he talked to his parents. I started playing basketball, began working on a CubeSAT, learned to program, changed my diet, and lost all the weight I had gained. I started to make new friends with more people at my school and was surprised to find out that 90% of their parents were divorced. Because we faced similar issues, we were able to support one and other, share tactics, and give advice. Sophomore year, I started an engineering club and found that I had a talent for managing people and encouraging them to create an idea even if it failed. I also learned how to take feedback and become more resilient. Here, I could nerd-out about warp drives and the possibility of anti-matter without being ignored. I would give a weekly report on new technology and we would have hour-long conversations about the various uses a blacker material could have. Frozen in disbelief, the chicken tries to make sense of her harsh words. “All the food, the nice soft hay, the flawless red barn--maybe all of this isn’t worth giving up. She just wants to protect me from losing it all.” The chicken replays the incident again. A fissure in the chicken’s unawareness, a plan begins to hatch. The chicken knows it must escape; it has to get to the other side. One of my friends, John, gave me advice on how to help my mother emotionally by showing her love, something I hadn’t been able to do before. My friends gave me a family and a home, when my own family was overwhelmed and my home was gone. After 14 years of living in a region destroyed by violence, I was sent away to boarding school in a region known for peace, Switzerland. That year my father was found guilty and imprisoned for the charges related to his Army support contract. Cautiously, it inches closer to the barrier, farther from the unbelievable perfection of the farm, and discovers a wide sea of black gravel. Stained with gray stones and marked with yellow lines, it separates the chicken from the opposite field. Now my friends in Switzerland come to me asking me for advice and help, and I feel as if I am a vital member of our community. I found purpose balancing the fuselage or leveling the ailerons to precisely 90 degrees. I loved cutting new parts and assembling them perfectly.

College Essay Whiz

College Essay Whiz If you live outside the Boston area, I’ll work with you by Skype. Although you need to be creative while writing your essay, resist the urge to get creative with the facts. Don't exaggerate your own accomplishments to make yourself look better. Don’t repeat what you’ve already supplied in your applicationâ€"grades, test scores, etc. Your essay serves to fill in the blanks beyond what you have supplied. Don’t worryâ€"the task before you may be challenging, but it’s hardly nuclear physics. Everything you need to know to write a winning “Why Us” Essay can be reduced to seven fairly straightforward tips. Even if one prompt draws your attention, however, spend some time thinking about at least a few of the other choices. Sometimes, deeper reflection can help you find an even better subject to write about than your first impulse. Use outlines, word clouds or free association to help you come up with material for each of the different prompts. Your essay should help to give better, deeper insight into you as a person. As the post mentions, your essay should supplement the other parts of your application to help us understand you better. On your visit to Brown, you made sure to try the famous pumpkin pancakes at Louis Family Restaurant. Hope you found them to be delicious but if you feel inclined to write about the experience, do so on Yelp, not as part of your “Why Us? Heaping generic praise on your school is not going to sway anyone. If you’re going to shower a college with flattery, make it as specific and genuine as you possibly can. You don't need to lay out a long list of all your shortcomings, but acknowledging weaknesses and misjudgments can demonstrate authenticity and give your legitimate accomplishments greater credibility. Admissions officers don't expect you to be perfect, so don't make your essay unbelievable by trying to pretend that you are. The list below begins by highlighting a series of important “don’ts” and ends with the “do’s” that are essential for success. Follow all seven tips with fidelity and we guarantee that your essay will sparkle. So, where does one find this type of substantive information? We recommend utilizing the top college guidebooks, a real-life or virtual tour of campus, a chat with a university rep, or some good old-fashioned Googling to gather what you need. That said, you don’t have to include anything about yourself that you don’t feel comfortable sharing. Feel free to be funny or creative â€" but don’t overreach. If your friends tell you that you’re the funniest person in the class, use that skill to your advantage. If your creativity is what sets you apart from your peers, let that innovation guide the structure and content of the essay. On the other hand, if every joke you make at the cafeteria table falls flatter than a pancake in a Panini press, don’t try to fake it. I see students mostly in my study room at the Newton, MA public library and at my home office. I can make house calls if you live within twenty minutes of Newton Center. Instead of letter grades, students receive qualitative evaluations from their professors. All courses are taught by professors, never TAs, and research opportunities for undergraduates abound. It’s little surprise that an insanely high number of Reed graduates go on to earn PhDs in their respective fields. If you can’t come up with a sincere answer to any of these questions, you might want to rethink why a given school is even on your college list in the first place.

Acknowledgement of Beauty in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek - Literature Essay Samples

Pilgrim at Tinker Creek written by Annie Dillard is a very mysterious novel. She goes through life examining many different things one would not typically pay attention to. She wants for us to go through life the way she does, by observing everything, whether it be big or small, and realize what is happening in our surroundings before it is gone. Pilgrim of Tinker Creek is a novel which consists of short passages which relate to one of her seven themes. The dissolution of the present is a big theme throughout her novel. â€Å"The wind is terrific out of the west; the sun comes and goes. I can see the shadow on the field before me deepen uniformly and spread like a plague. Everything seems so dull I am amazed I can even distinguish objects. And suddenly the light runs across the land like a comber, and up the trees, and goes again in a wink: I think I’ve gone blind or died. When it comes again, the light, you hold your breath, and if it stays you forget about it until it goes again†. This is a perfect example of the dissolution of the present. Dissolution of the present in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek could be described as the ending or disappearance of present events, such as the sun setting into night. Annie Dillard uses the coming of night as an example of people not paying attention to what is happening around them. The shadow spreading like a plaque over the field is an analogy one would normally not think of, but it is the perfect example. She is paying attention to every small change that is happening as the sun goes down and all of a sudden the sun has set and it is dark outside, which she compares to being dead or blind. She then talks about how people typically only pay attention to a change for the first few moments it is happening and then forget about it once it is constantly there, like the sun and night. Meaning we only acknowledge the beauty of nature when it is fresh in our minds, but really, this beauty should not be taken for granted and we should be engaged in the beauty around us. It is not just in this passage but all throughout the novel that Annie Dillard is trying to emphasize every action in nature has beauty in it, there is just the choice of whether or not we want to look at it from a fresh view point. The idea that the beauty of nature is being ignored is what Annie Dillard is trying to address throughout the novel. She comes to the realization that we only pay attention to natures changes when one event ends and another starts, this being the ending of the present. Annie Dillard devotes a whole chapter to the present and shows us all the ways the human population takes nature for granted. She starts off with a sentence saying â€Å"Catch it if you can,† (Dillard 78). This is the most intriguing sentence throughout the whole novel because she is hinting towards what she wants us to do. She is saying capture the present and what is happening while you can, rather than when it is gone. â€Å"Over head, great strips and chunks of cloud dash to the northwest in a gold rush. At my back the sun is setting, how can I not have noticed before that the sun is setting? My mind has been a blank slab of black asphalt for hours, but that doesn’t stop the sun’s wild wheel. I set my coffee beside me on the curb; I smell loam on the wind; I pat the puppy; I watch the mountain,† (Dillard 79). Here, Annie Dillard again brings up the sunset but she is realizing that she did not notice the sunset right away like she did earlier in the novel. She forgets that the sun is setting and realizes that just because she forgot does not mean the sun will stop its routinely cycle. After this realization she starts to observe her surroundings again carefully and takes time to absorb everything happening around her. Her novel seems to suggest she notices the sun changing more than anything else, maybe because this is one of the most beautiful events nature has to offer yet we take advantage of it. Although she loves the sun, she still enjoys even the small things that nature has to offer and uses them to remember things about her past. â€Å"The color patches of vision part, shift, and reform as I move through space in time. The present is the object of vision, a nd what I see before me at any given second is a full field of color patches scattered just so. The configuration will never be repeated. Living is moving; time is a live creek bearing changing lights. As I move, or as the world moves around me, the fullness of what I see shatters. This second of shattering is an augenblick, â€Å"Verweile doch† Last forever!† Who hasn’t prayed that prayer? But the augenblick isn’t going to verweile. You were lucky to get it in the first place. The present is a freely given canvas. That it is constantly being ripped apart and washed downstream goes without saying; it is a canvas, nevertheless† (Dillard, 84). Here, Dillard is talking not only about the events around her but also the colors. She is trying to explain that whatever events are happening will occur again but they will never happen in the exact same way, making each time they happen unique. This gives her another reason to the readers as to why we should pa y attention to our surroundings and not ignore the beauty around us. When Dillard says the present is a canvas she is suggesting that everyday we are given a new beginning and picture that is going to be different from yesterday’s which will not last forever. The present is always ending is what Dillard is suggesting with this quote. But it will always be there for us to observe, just forever disappearing. â€Å"These arent still shots; the camera is always moving. And the scene is always just slipping out of sight, as if in spite of myself I were always just descending a hill, rounding a corner, stepping into the street with a companion who urges me on, while I look back over my shoulder at the sight which recedes, vanishes. The present of my consciousness is itself a mystery which is also always just rounding a bend like a floating branch borne by a flood. Where am I? But Im not. â€Å"I will overturn, overturn, overturn it: and it shall be no more† (Dillard 95). Di llard is once again talking about the present constantly changing. Whenever Dillard notices something changing around her the next second she notices, it is gone or changed in some sort of way. The present is always a mystery and she suggests you won’t know what is going to happen next or even notice the change that has happened unless you are paying attention to what goes on around you. The quotes are all leading back to the same idea that we need to be paying attention to our surroundings and not taking the beauty that we have in this world for granted. In today’s society nature is very well taken advantage of. We are distracted by technology and many other things which draw our minds away from anything that is happening around us. Like Annie Dillard said, one second it is light outside and the next it is night and it feels as if you are bind because you do not realize what has happened and do not care to acknowledge it because it is a normal occurrence. The presence is always ending and we don’t care that we are missing the beauty of it. Annie Dillard’s reasoning of telling the readers to take advantage of the beauty around them is relevant in present day. It is true that no one is taking advantage of what we have in the outside world. Annie Dillard wants readers to take away more than just that she thinks they need to pay attention to their surroundings but also not to let anything in their lives be taken for granted. She uses nature as something being taken for granted because it is one of the most common things we don’t pay attention to or realize the changes happening until after they are gone. Like the sun setting we only realize it is gone once it is dark or when the vibrant colors of the sunset are in the sky and then suddenly it is dark and no one cares to realize the beauty of how quickly something can change. She is hoping people will realize from reading her book nature and its beauty is not something that should be taken granted for rather we should take what we have in the outside world to distract us from technology. Annie Dillard is trying to emphasize every action in nature has beauty in it, but people are choosing to ignore the beauty when they need to look at it with a fresh pair of eyes, e veryday.
